What is Early Intervention

Occupational Therapy?

Paediatric Occupational Therapist assisting a child to sit and play

Early childhood is an extraordinary time of growth and change. Alignment Kids supports infants, toddlers and children up to the age of 5, providing tailored support during critical developmental windows. Through early intervention, we focus on building foundational skills, boosting confidence, and empowering your child to reach their full potential.

Alignment Kids occupational therapy is all about helping children develop the skills they need to participate in the activities, tasks, and roles that make life meaningful—what we call "occupations." For kids, this might mean learning to play, interact, move, eat or dress with as much independence and joy as possible.

Whether your child needs help with fine motor skills, sensory processing, self-care, or social interactions, we are here to guide, support, and celebrate every step of the way. Together, we make the little things feel possible—and the big things feel magical!

FAQs

  • Paediatric occupational therapy focuses on helping children develop the skills and abilities they need for everyday activities—like playing, self-care (e.g., dressing, eating), and social interaction. Therapists grade and adapt activities to each child’s unique abilities to promote independence and confidence.

  • You can book directly without a referral. However, to be eligible for Medicare rebates, you require an Enhanced Primary Care Plan, or Chronic Disease Management Plan from your GP. If you’re unsure, check with your GP, paediatrician, or your insurance provider for specific requirements.

  • Children who struggle with fine motor skills, sensory processing, motor coordination, or who are falling behind on developmental milestones may benefit from OT. If you’re noticing challenges with daily tasks like feeding, dressing, or play, an initial assessment can help determine next steps.

  • The first session typically involves an assessment, where the therapist observes your child’s current skills and discusses their developmental history and goals. This helps create a personalised therapy plan. You’ll also have an opportunity to ask questions and share concerns.

  • Sessions usually last between 30 to 60 minutes, depending on your child’s needs and goals. Your therapist will recommend an appropriate session length and frequency based on the initial assessment.

  • Our in-person clinic in Currimundi is an intimate studio space, meaning that if you would like to stay, you will be able to observe and if you choose, take part in the session. This can be from the comfort of our clinic couch, or joining in on the floor with your child. Our therapists often encourage parental involvement as a part of sessions, especially for younger children, as it helps you learn strategies to use at home. However, the format can vary. Your therapist will discuss whether direct involvement, observation, or a short break is best for your child’s progress.

  • The frequency of sessions depends on your child’s individual goals, needs, and progress. Some children may benefit from weekly sessions, while others might see improvements with fortnightly or monthly appointments, or intensive therapy blocks throughout the year. Your therapist will guide you on a schedule that optimally supports your child’s development.

  • It’s normal for children to take time to adjust to new environments and routines. Occupational therapists are trained to use fun, child-friendly approaches and will modify activities to keep your child engaged. If your child becomes upset, the therapist may adjust the session to support a positive experience.

  • Coverage varies based on your location, funding options, and policy details. In Australia, children may be eligible for services through Medicare, the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), or private health insurance. Check with your insurance provider or discuss options with your therapist to explore available funding.

Please note, we are not a registered NDIS provider and are unable to see ‘Agency Managed’ NDIS participants at this point in time. We do welcome, Self Managed or Plan managed participants.
